Case Study 2: Kingsman The Secret Service

Analyse 1 key scene from the film using the links below or your own sources. You should be explaining how the different sound elements ( spoken word, music and sound effects ) create mood and meaning for the audience and how they relate to the images onscreen. Use as many key terms as possible and use timings .
( e.g " at 34 sec we hear diegetic classical music slowly fade into the sound mix which creates an atmosphere of fear in the audience").

During the fight scene at the pub; hopeful background music begins to fade into the scene, this background music then comes to a sudden end when the scene communicates that "Harry Hart" is exiting the pub and leaving the goons to settle their "beef" with Eggsy. However, one of the goons makes a comment directed at Harry as he is about to exit the facility, this is when Harry decides to teach them a lesson. In addition to this, the hopeful background music suddenly emerges once again right after the comment is made by one of the goons. This is all done to build excitement as well as for dramatic effect.

The cinematography of the scenes is very well communicated within this film as the scenes are specifically designed to convey the emotions and receive an expected reaction from the audience. It is a flow of communication between the the way the scene is presented and the audience. For efficient cinematography scenes in the movie include different and very specific types of camera shots, lighting, sound, etc.

Here are some of the techniques and types of shots used to create the pub fight scene:
Camera Tilts
Camera Focus
Close Ups
Medium Shots
Use of Zoom
Extreme Close Ups
Dolly Shots
Medium Shots

The violence and action of this film is based a lot more on editing than any other area. For example during the bar fight you will see moments of slow motion, for example when one of the goons' punches is deflected onto his mate, the punch hits his mate in the mouth and you see a tooth flying out of his mouth in slow motion. Also, a animation process is carried out, for example when the hi-tech umbrella Harry possesses, the visuals for it are animated as well as when Harry deploys the electric wrist band at one of the goons, it is also an animation process that is allowing it to be seen mid-air. Finally, fast motion is also used. The scene is dramatically sped up to create a feeling of excitement and aggression. The violence is highly over exaggerated and the fast motion ensures that the scene appeals to the audience and fans of the genre.
